The importance of spelling and how to prepare your child for their spelling test

Although we have tools like spell check and Google translate, spelling is still a very important skill and schools will not stop testing your children’s spelling abilities. Learning a list of words reaches way beyond mindless memorising. Spelling is found to impact the way your child reads, communicates, writes and comprehends texts.

But how do we prepare our children for a spelling test so that the words they learn are correctly comprehended and remembered to be used in their writing’s? There are a few simple ways to achieve this:

1.     Start by asking your child to write a simple sentence for each spelling word, so that the word is used in the correct context.

2.     Once the sentences are done, test the words by first stating the spelling word and then repeating it in a sentence to put the word in context.

3.     Lastly, play a fun word game. Stick the spelling words up throughout the house. Every time any family member finds a word they need to make a sentence featuring the word.

Spelling is now more important than ever with the increasing time spent on various digital platforms. Poor spelling can lead you to look less credible and intelligent than what you truly are. So let’s invest in our children’s spelling and make every effort to prepare them for those tests that don’t always seem that important.
